Adult Reading Programs from SEKLSGeneral Information Themes Several themes have been developed. These are:
Publicity and other materials All materials are suitable for printing on 8.5” x 11” paper. For best results, the posters should be printed using a color inkjet printer. For other materials, you will probably want to print out one copy and then use a photocopier for other copies. For each theme, there are Microsoft Publisher files on the disk we send (or on the SEKLS web site) for the following:
In addition, there is a Reading Log which can be used with any theme. Materials will say “Brought to you by the Southeast Kansas Library System and Your Library”. You will probably want to edit the file to substitute the name of your library for the words “Your Library” before printing them out. Planning the program The program need not be complicated. It can be as simple as publicizing the program and having people record the books they read, and nothing more. For other ideas related to the theme, see the tip sheet for each theme. Choose a theme. Look over the tips sheet for ideas on how to implement the program. Feel free to adapt the program and materials to what is best for your library. Decide for what period of time the reading program will run (for instance, one month, six weeks, during the same time as the children’s summer reading program, etc.). If desired, you can edit the poster and bookmarks to include this information. Decide whether to use a completion requirement and what the completion requirement for the reading program will be. For example, 6 books, 10 books, 2000 pages, 3000 pages, etc. Decide whether only books will be counted as part of the reading program, or whether magazines, audio books, or other nonprint materials will count. Decide whether and how you will register people for the program. Decide whether reading must be related to the theme where appropriate, or whether all reading will count. Some themes lend themselves well to tying reading to the theme, but all themes can be used without doing so. Decide whether rewards will be used for participants and, if so, what they will be. A certificate to go with each theme is provided. Beyond that, you may wish to have special events for those who complete requirements, give prizes for reaching certain levels or completing the requirements, etc. Develop a handout sheet or brochure outlining how your program works. Because the way programs will be run in different libraries will vary widely, we have made no attempt to provide a uniform handout sheet or brochure. However, feel free to copy and paste the clip art used in other materials to make your own if you wish. Publicize your program. Some ideas:
Give a certificate of completion to each person who completed your program requirements. There are two certificates for each theme. Certificate 1 can be printed as is; Certificate 2 is made to be printed on special certificate paper with a pre-printed border. You can either type in the name of each recipient and print each certificate individually, or you can print one (remove the “Name of Recipient” text before you do this), photocopy it, and write or type the names in. The librarian or program coordinator should sign and date the certificate. Enjoy yourself! Send SEKLS copies of materials you produce After the program is complete, please send SEKLS copies of any materials you produce for this program. Where appropriate, we will incorporate your ideas in the tip sheet or copy materials (such as puzzles and games) for future users of this reading program. In this way, the theme can be enriched as time goes by. |
