The Talking Books Service provides recorded books and magazines to persons who are print handicapped, those who cannot see to read or who cannot physically handle books.  Choice of recorded materials and playback equipment are loaned at no charge to eligible patrons of all ages.  Service is provided postage-free from the Talking Books Wichita Subregional Library.

Applications for service are available at any public library or from the Talking Books consultant.

The special needs consultant in Iola works directly with Talking Book patrons, visits patrons and institutions, and acts as readers' advisor for materials selection. She provides informational materials and presentations about the SEK Library System’s special needs collections, and other resources to libraries, individual and institutional caregivers, and other health care providers.

Special needs are also addressed by several collections available to the general population as well.  These include DVS (Descriptive Video Service) home videos for low vision, Print-Braille-and Picture books, Print-Braille books, Recreation Therapy Aids, and Bi-Folkal reminiscing materials for older adults.  These items are loaned to individuals and institutions through SEK's interlibrary loan department. Specific information about each of the collections is available in large print on request.
